This guide has been created to help residents and visitors to Charlotte find fun and essential things to do. Named after Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III, Charlotte is sometimes referred to as the Queen City. Probably the most popular and prominent section of Charlotte is what is referred to as the "Center City" -- the area that is bounded by I-77, I-85, and I285. What is now Center City Charlotte was essentially the entire city until the early twentieth century. Today, Center City remains the hub for Charlotte business, shopping, museums, arts and entertainment, fine restaurants, nightlife, and where one can find historic buildings and landmarks. Some of the Center City’s chief residents include 45 cultural and arts related facilities, 5 theatres including the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, located at the heart of Center City in Founders Hall, 6 museums including the ever popular Discovery Place and the Charlotte Museum of History, numerous art galleries along North Davidson Street, which has become something of an artists’ haven, Bank of America Stadium, and the Charlotte Convention Center. Each month, the city of Charlotte hosts a Gallery Crawl on North Davidson Street, giving residents and visitors the opportunity to view the creations of local talent. Golf, sailing and fishing are among the locals’ favorite pasttimes -- not to mention day trips; Charlotte lies within two hours of the Great Smoky Mountains, three hours of the beaches of North and South Carolina and two hours of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
